This months report is a
little late, I've been enjoying a short holiday with my fiancee in Georgia
USA and only just got home. Here are a couple of photographs of the greenhouses that
were taken on the 24th of January 2003. Surprisingly for this time of the
year there is still a lot of green on most of the plants.
I guess this must be related in some way to global warming, it's only in the
last couple of years that the plants have been green at this time of year. There have been
some very hard frosts, but the natural gas heater that I use appears to be
doing a good job of keeping the cold at bay.
During the colder months of the year we need to be very
careful with the watering of all plants. We are aiming to keep them as dry
as possible without them getting dust dry. We must try not to get the
foliage wet while watering, as this can lead to mildew forming on the
leaves in the closed conditions of a greenhouse. The best way of doing
this is to stand the pots in a shallow dish of water for approximately ten
