Virginia Bickel's newest book Come September  has just been released. Order it now!

In Virginia Bickel?s second book, she turns from historical fiction to mystery. Come September is the story of Daniel Lindsey?s quest to identify the young woman found unconscious in front of his store, and to find out what she was doing on Mesa Street, in El Paso, Texas.  She brings to this genre her skill with character development and dialogue. You won't be disappointed.

sept_2002b.jpg (40091 bytes) The last show that I take my plants to is the Jacksdale Garden Center Show. 2002 is the first year that it has been held, and I believe that we should all support our local shows, and help keep them successful. There were only two classes for fuchsias at this show, one for a fuchsia in any size pot, and the other for a tryphilla fuchsia in any size pot. I didn't show a tryphilla (I don't have much luck at growing them), but I entered three standard fuchsias of Waveney Sunrise in the other class, and won first place with one of them. It's the standard with the red card in the pot  in the middle of this first picture.
sept_2002a.jpg (39751 bytes) I personally thought that one of the other plants I took was the better plant, it's the standard of Waveney Sunrise on the right side of this second picture. I preferred it because it was just the right shape and covered in an abundance of flowers and leaves. But the judge of course knows much better than I, and we must abide by his decision. That is one of the things I enjoy about showing, the differences of opinion that you find among growers and judges. One will have a preference for one plant, and the other prefer another totally different one. It wouldn't do for us all to be alike. Would it?

I'll continue with the tutorial on growing standard fuchsias next month. Been too much happening over August and September for me to have time to work on it.
