The
antique wedding ornament shown in these pictures, was a gift to the bride's
Maternal great grandparents from Schall and Company of Manhattan in 1888,
115 years ago. It was first used by the bride's great-grandparents in
1888, then it was used by the Bride's grand-parents on September 19th,1909.
It has since been used by their children, Grand-children and
great-grand-children. These first two pictures were taken on Kathy's
kitchen table, when the ornament had been removed from it's glass case,
the day that it arrived in Georgia. It had been
brought down from New York by Kathy's Aunt and Uncle, Alice and Walter
Haff. Kathy and Alfie are the 25th couple to have this ornament on their
cake.

Schall
and company were ornamental Confectioners on Barclay St. in lower
Manhattan. The angel kneeling by the anvil, the gold ring on the anvil,
and the gold rings on the base of the ornament are
all made of sugar icing. The angel, the anvil and the ring, represent the
forging of the wedding band. On the
base of the ornament is also written FIRM meaning that the marriage is
firm and the couple will stay together, as long as the ornament will last.
The flowers that adorn the top are all silk. Both Great-grand parents were
confectioners and worked for Schall's for many years.

These
next two pictures are of the cake ornament when it was on display on the
wedding day in the
foyer of the country club in Milledgeville Georgia. It aroused a great deal
of interest and people were standing in line to look at it and take pictures
of it. There is a little discoloration of the sugar at the base of the
ornament, but, apart from that it is in excellent condition. |

Kathy and
Alfie were both very proud to be the 25th couple to be married with this
ornament on their cake, and wonder how many other lucky couples will be able
to share the same pleasure in the years to come. |
Please return to this site, I will be adding more pictures as they are
processed.
